Toyota has initiated a safety recall for 8,521 electric C-HR SUVs in North America due to a software error in the electric vehicle control unit. The defect can lead to battery overcharging during regenerative braking, which triggers warning alerts and may cause the drive system to shut down unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion.

The recall affects 2026 model-year vehicles manufactured between February 6, 2026, and July 10, 2026. While the initial estimate suggested 10,000 units, the company confirmed the final figure of 8,521 vehicles in a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Toyota plans to notify owners starting October 18, 2026. Dealerships will provide a free software update for the battery control unit to resolve the issue. Owners can reference recall number 26TA17 or contact customer service for further assistance.

The C-HR EV, which launched earlier this year with a starting price of approximately $37,000, is one of three electric SUVs currently offered by Toyota in the North American market. There are indications that the recall might eventually extend to international markets where similar models are sold.
