Toyota has filed a new patent in the United States for a simulated transmission system designed for electric vehicles. Unlike previous concepts featuring a clutch pedal and manual shifter, this new design focuses on mimicking the feel of a traditional automatic or dual-clutch transmission without the third pedal.

The system adjusts torque across six gears by momentarily cutting power to the electric motors during shifts. This process creates a physical sensation similar to gear changes in combustion-powered cars. Drivers can operate the system using either paddle shifters or a traditional shift lever.

The upcoming second-generation Lexus LFA, unveiled as a concept in December 2025, is a potential candidate for this technology. The vehicle shares an aluminum chassis with the Toyota GR GT. Reports suggest the new LFA might also be the first production model from the Toyota group to feature advanced solid-state battery cells.
