TotalEnergies Lubrifiants has introduced the Coolant Keep Plate (CKP), a passive component aimed at enhancing safety in immersion-cooled lithium-ion battery systems. The device is specifically engineered to address thermal management challenges during high-load operations, such as fast charging, by improving heat transfer and temperature uniformity.
The primary function of the CKP is to prevent the displacement of dielectric fluid during cell venting. By separating gas and liquid phases, the plate ensures that fluid remains around the most vulnerable cells, thereby mitigating the risk of fire and thermal runaway propagation. The component operates without the need for sensors, electrical power, or external control systems.
In testing across various battery configurations, the integration of the CKP successfully prevented fire and thermal runaway propagation in scenarios where such failures occurred without the plate. While the component is optimized for the company's own dielectric fluids, the underlying design principle is adaptable to different cell formats and battery architectures.
