Cloud-based smart home systems face significant risks during internet outages, as demonstrated by the October 2025 AWS US-EAST-1 failure. During this incident, Eight Sleep smart beds became unresponsive or overheated, while the 2022 shutdown of Insteon servers left users without automation capabilities. In Russia, frequent internet restrictions in regions like Nizhny Novgorod, Rostov, and Moscow have highlighted the vulnerability of systems dependent on external cloud providers.
CleverHome addresses these risks by utilizing local controllers instead of cloud-based gateways. These servers manage sensors and devices, including ZigBee-based hardware, directly within the apartment or building. This architecture ensures that essential functions like leak detection and automated scenarios remain operational even when external connectivity is lost. The system is designed to maintain autonomy for one hour during power outages.
Local processing also enhances data privacy by keeping information within the premises. CleverHome’s BMS platform restricts external access to data, even from the company itself, to protect user security. While this approach improves resilience and privacy, it introduces challenges such as more complex software updates across multiple distributed servers and higher costs for troubleshooting incidents compared to centralized cloud solutions.
