According to Gartner, nearly one-third of employees dismissed due to AI adoption will need to be rehired by 2029. The costs associated with bringing these staff members back are expected to exceed the savings generated by initial layoffs, as companies face increased competition for talent and the loss of internal expertise.
Data from Forrester supports the view that companies will likely need to rehire a significant portion of staff replaced by neural networks. Furthermore, Gartner predicts that 75% of organizations prioritizing cost-cutting through AI-driven productivity will lag behind competitors who instead invest in innovation and workforce skill development by 2027.
Real-world examples show mixed results. Indian support firm Dukaan replaced 90% of its staff with AI in July 2023, reporting an 85% reduction in support costs. Conversely, Ford had to rehire hundreds of engineers in 2026 to address quality control issues that AI failed to resolve.
Oracle also pursued a strategy of staff reduction, cutting its workforce by approximately 21,000 people, or 13%, in the 2026 fiscal year. Following these layoffs, the company retains a staff of about 141,000 employees while continuing to invest heavily in AI infrastructure under pressure from investors.
