A software researcher spent six hours investigating a minor performance issue in the Obsidian note-taking application. The problem manifested as a 300–500 ms delay when switching settings menus, which the user initially attempted to resolve by checking plugins, themes, and hardware acceleration with the help of ChatGPT.
The investigation involved using Chrome DevTools to profile the interface, where the user measured individual layout and style recalculation tasks at 5–10 ms. By comparing different software versions, the user identified that version 1.13.4 had a significant performance regression compared to version 1.12.7, which operated with a 30–60 ms delay.
The user eventually submitted an official bug report to the Obsidian team. The process highlighted how AI tools can lower the barrier to entry for complex technical tasks, leading users to expand the scope of simple troubleshooting into full-scale performance investigations.
