Apple CEO John Ternus recently described an intelligent personal hub concept that prioritizes local processing and privacy. While the company has not announced a new home device, industry trends suggest a growing need for dedicated home servers that combine networking, storage, and AI processing.

At the IFA consumer tech show, companies like Anker and Ugreen introduced hubs featuring local AI, network-attached storage, and support for standards like Matter, Thread, and Zigbee. Anker’s Eufy MindBase, for instance, supports 16 cameras and up to 48 TB of expandable local storage.

Current smart home infrastructure remains fragmented, with many routers lacking proper Matter and Thread integration. Although Comcast added support for these protocols in 2022, the features remain inactive, complicating device connectivity for users.

Apple’s recent contributions to the open-source OpenWrt project, specifically regarding Matter Home Router Access Point implementation, indicate potential progress in networking infrastructure. Reports from Matter Alpha suggest this code could be adapted for consumer hardware.

A hypothetical Apple Home Server could consolidate Wi-Fi routing, Thread border routing, and local AI processing into one unit. Such a device would allow for local automation and secure storage, potentially working alongside existing products like Apple TV and HomePod.
