Tesla has submitted its formal response to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding the certification of the Cybercab. The company provided the documents by the October 30 deadline but requested that the entire filing remain confidential.
The NHTSA had issued a Special Order in September demanding proof that the Cybercab meets federal safety standards. The agency raised concerns regarding the absence of a foot brake, mirrors, and a steering wheel, as well as the lack of a Part 555 exemption, which competitors like Zoox have obtained for their own robotaxis.
The only public portion of Tesla's submission is a guide for first responders, which was already available on the company's website. The remaining documents, including explanations of how the vehicle complies with specific safety rules, are currently withheld from public view.
The NHTSA is now reviewing Tesla's confidentiality request. The agency has not yet determined whether the information qualifies as protected business data or if a public version must be released. Meanwhile, approximately 1 000 Cybercabs continue to operate in Austin.
