A 22-year-old driver from Sacramento was involved in a collision while operating a Tesla with the Full Self-Driving (FSD) system active. The vehicle struck a parked California Highway Patrol cruiser at high speed, resulting in serious injuries to two officers who were hospitalized. The driver of the Tesla sustained only minor injuries.
The incident occurred at a site where officers were responding to a previous fatal accident involving a 19-year-old driver. Despite the presence of traffic cones, flares, and the patrol car's emergency lights, the Tesla failed to stop. The driver admitted to investigators that he was asleep while the FSD system was engaged.
The California Highway Patrol confirmed that the driver has been arrested and charged. Officials reiterated that Tesla's FSD is a Level 2 automation system, which requires constant driver supervision and does not provide full autonomous control. Tesla has not yet issued an official statement regarding the crash.
