Tesla has launched the Cybercab, a two-seater autonomous vehicle without a steering wheel or pedals, in Austin, Texas. The cars are available through the Robotaxi service in specific city districts. The company's AI head, Ashok Elluswamy, stated that the service is now open to anyone.
The company has registered 420 autonomous vehicles in Texas, including 45 Cybercabs. For comparison, Waymo has 988 vehicles in the state. Production of the Cybercab began in April 2026, following its initial presentation in October 2024. The model features gull-wing doors and wireless charging.
Tesla is introducing dynamic pricing for the service, although specific rates have not been disclosed. The company has also opened a form for businesses and entrepreneurs interested in purchasing individual Cybercabs or entire fleets for commercial use, including the creation of infrastructure and mobile hubs.
The Robotaxi service using Model Y vehicles is currently operational in Austin, Dallas, and Houston, Texas, as well as Miami, Orlando, and Tampa, Florida. Earlier, the first Robotaxi trips in Austin based on Model Y were launched in June 2025, with safety drivers present, and driverless tests began in December 2025.
On September 4, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began an investigation into approximately 1,000 Cybercabs. The regulator is examining whether the model complies with federal safety standards, as it lacks steering wheels, pedals, and mirrors.
