CEO Praveer Sinha announced that India is preparing for an increase in electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence. The strategy focuses on expanding renewable energy generation and implementing energy storage technologies, specifically battery energy storage systems (BESS) and pumped storage projects (PSP).
In 2025, India added 0.5 GWh of BESS capacity, marking a 26% year-over-year increase. Government projections estimate a total storage requirement of approximately 410 GWh by the 2032 fiscal year, with pumped storage expected to account for 42% of this capacity.
Tata Power currently manages a clean energy portfolio of 17.5 GW. The company is developing the 1,000 MW Bhivpuri pumped storage project in Maharashtra, with 324 MW already contracted through the Solar Energy Corporation of India. Additionally, a 1,800 MW project is planned for Shirwata.
The demand for electricity is expected to rise by over 570 TWh in India over the next five years. This growth is partly fueled by the data center sector, which is projected to expand by 30% year-over-year in 2026, placing significant pressure on the national power grid.
