Stellantis (Shanghai) Automotive Co., Ltd. has initiated a recall of specific imported hybrid vehicles in China due to potential safety risks. The recall involves 979 Wrangler hybrid models produced between September 5, 2023, and March 26, 2024, as well as 1,178 Grand Cherokee 4xe hybrid units manufactured from July 19, 2023, to October 9, 2023.
The technical issue stems from sand contamination during the engine casting process. These particles can infiltrate internal engine components, potentially leading to engine failure. In severe cases, the defect may cause a loss of power while driving or trigger a fire within the engine compartment, posing a significant safety hazard for vehicle owners.
To address the defect, Stellantis will provide free software updates for the engine control modules of all affected vehicles. The company will also perform diagnostic engine tests. If the inspection reveals bearing damage caused by the contamination, Stellantis will replace the entire engine assembly at no cost to the vehicle owners to eliminate the safety risk.
