SpaceX has begun installing a large protective roof structure over the Pad 1 launch site at Starbase. According to footage from NASASpaceflight, the installation process commenced on September 9, 2026, with a crane lifting a massive section of the roof into position.

The primary purpose of this structure is to shield the launch tower and its associated equipment from intense gas flows and exhaust generated during the return of Starship and Super Heavy vehicles. This design mirrors the solution previously implemented at the Pad 2 launch site.

This infrastructure upgrade is essential for the company's goal of regular vehicle recovery. SpaceX plans to use the Mechazilla tower mechanism, featuring specialized mechanical arms, to catch descending ships directly at the launch site.

In preparation for upcoming operations, SpaceX recently upgraded the Mechazilla arms in August 2026. Meanwhile, the company is preparing for the 14th launch, scheduled for September, while Super Heavy Booster 22 and Ship 42 are currently undergoing testing for the 15th flight.
