SpaceX has secured $40 billion in debt financing to purchase graphics processing units for its artificial intelligence data centers. The company plans to receive the hardware during the first and second quarters of 2027.
Elon Musk stated that the funding was made possible due to the company's investment-grade credit rating and revenue from Starlink and space launches. The deal reportedly includes $10 billion in bank loans and $30 billion in investment-grade debt, with Apollo Global Management and PIMCO involved.
Musk predicted a wave of consolidation among smaller cloud infrastructure startups, or neoclouds, as access to credit tightens. He noted that over 200 such companies face potential acquisition or failure as debt markets restrict funding for firms lacking independent revenue streams.
The broader AI infrastructure sector faces rising pressure as investors demand higher yields on corporate bonds. Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs project that capital expenditure and borrowing by major hyperscalers will continue to grow, reaching $1 trillion and $400 billion respectively by 2027.
