Elon Musk predicts that the majority of the more than 200 AI cloud companies will either go bankrupt or be acquired. He notes that lenders have largely ceased funding firms that rely exclusively on revenue from AI data centers, as these businesses often carry heavy debt loads to purchase Nvidia chips.

CoreWeave, a major player in the sector, is currently facing financial pressure with its debt obligations reaching $50 billion. The yield on the company's $2.75 billion bond, maturing in 2031, recently climbed to a record 15.76%. Following these developments, CoreWeave shares have dropped approximately 70% from their peak value.

In contrast, SpaceX recently secured $40 billion in financing, consisting of $10 billion in bank loans and $30 billion in bonds. Musk attributed this success to the company's investment-grade rating and steady income from Starlink and rocket launches. SpaceX reported $7.6 billion in revenue from its AI unit last quarter.

Despite the market volatility, CoreWeave CEO Mike Intrator stated in an internal memo that the company's backlog is sufficient to cover its debt obligations. Meanwhile, other companies in the sector, including Oracle, Dell, and Hut 8, have also experienced significant stock price declines amid broader concerns about the sustainability of AI-focused cloud business models.
