Elon Musk predicts a wave of consolidation among AI cloud providers, known as neoclouds, due to tightening debt markets. He suggests that out of more than 200 existing startups, only a small number will survive independently as financial pressure increases.
The top five publicly listed neoclouds hold a combined debt of $61 billion, which has quadrupled year over year. Additionally, they carry $18 billion in operating leases as of September 2026. CoreWeave, the largest provider, reports debt between $35 billion and $52 billion with negative GAAP earnings.
Market sentiment has shifted, evidenced by a recent spike in CoreWeave’s unsecured bond yields and a stock price decline of more than 15%. Gartner projects that over 80% of neocloud providers will cease to operate independently by 2030.
Industry projections for 2026–2030 estimate $7 trillion in spending against $3.6 trillion in revenue. October 2026 estimates suggest only 7 to 10 neoclouds will remain independent, with consolidation expected to accelerate in 2027.
