SpaceX plans to deploy artificial intelligence data centers in space using Nvidia components. Elon Musk stated that the company intends to launch these systems starting next year, with the ultimate goal of deploying approximately 1 million specialized data centers into orbit.
The hardware for these orbital facilities will be based on the Nvidia NVL72 system. This configuration integrates 72 Rubin graphics processors, 36 Vera central processors, ConnectX-9 network controllers, and BlueField-4 accelerators.
SpaceX CFO Bret Johnsen confirmed that the initial orbital data centers are scheduled for launch in 2027. However, the company does not anticipate a significant volume of such launches until 2028, citing the need for close cooperation with Nvidia to secure necessary components.
To accommodate the new hardware, SpaceX will utilize the platform currently used for Starlink V3 satellites. The design involves replacing specific communication equipment with computing modules and increasing the power generation capacity of the solar panels on the satellites.
