SpaceX is conducting cryogenic testing of the Starship Ship 42 spacecraft at the Massey test site in Texas. During these procedures, the vessel is filled with liquid oxygen and methane, which are cooled to extremely low temperatures. This process causes frost to form on the exterior of the ship as atmospheric moisture freezes upon contact with the chilled hull.
The testing process also includes the operation of a pressure relief system, which vents gas generated by the evaporation of cryogenic fuel. This mechanism is essential for maintaining safe pressure levels within the tanks during the fueling phase. These activities are part of the preparations for the upcoming Flight 15 mission.
The Ship 42 spacecraft is slated to launch as part of the Flight 15 test flight, paired with the Super Heavy Booster 22. Both the spacecraft and the booster are currently undergoing a series of evaluations at the Starbase facility in Texas, including the required cryogenic checks at the Massey range.
