South Korean authorities are preparing to meet with cryptocurrency exchange representatives to discuss a potential postponement of a planned digital asset tax. The tax, which was initially set to take effect in January, includes a 22 percent levy on transactions and lending activities involving digital assets.
The proposed regulation provides an exemption for gains below ₩2.5 million. However, the implementation of this policy has already been delayed three times due to persistent technical and regulatory challenges regarding staking, airdrops, and the infrastructure supporting decentralized finance.
Any further postponement of the tax requires formal approval from the National Assembly. A legislative proposal to delay the implementation until 2029 has already been introduced, and the upcoming discussions between officials and industry players will play a critical role in the final decision.
