The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has introduced a proposed framework to establish federal oversight for cryptocurrency exchanges in the United States. The initiative suggests creating a new registration category called the crypto asset market, which would operate directly under the jurisdiction of the commission.

The proposed rules target exchanges that provide retail services involving margin, leverage, or financing. These platforms would be required to implement specific measures, including market surveillance, anti-manipulation protocols, customer protection standards, and proof-of-reserves controls.

Currently, the CFTC does not possess the authority to mandate universal federal registration for all platforms. Consequently, basic spot exchanges may continue to function under existing state-level money-transmitter licenses if they choose not to opt into the new federal framework.

Market participants are now watching for reactions from major industry players such as Coinbase and Binance. The future of this proposal depends on feedback from lawmakers and potential legislative amendments, which could influence broader market sentiment and Bitcoin price trends.
