Sony has introduced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), an AI-based upscaling technology designed for the standard PlayStation 5. This feature stems from the Project Amethyst collaboration between Sony and AMD. Unlike the PSSR technology found on the PS5 Pro, QSSR operates without dedicated machine learning hardware, resulting in lower performance capabilities.

According to Daniel Craig, a principal graphics R&D engineer at Sony, QSSR serves as a drop-in replacement for titles that already support PSSR, requiring only a few days of tuning. While the PS5 Pro typically targets 4K output, developers using QSSR on the standard console must adjust render resolutions and presentation targets to achieve optimal results, likely landing near 1440p.

The technology is now available to all PlayStation developers. The first titles to receive patches enabling QSSR as an additional graphics option are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Additionally, the Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition launched today, incorporating this new upscaling capability to improve image sharpness.
