The SETI Institute and the Breakthrough Listen project have integrated AI agents into the Allen Telescope Array in Northern California. These agents manage antenna operations, configure hardware, and process incoming data streams in real time, reducing the need for manual intervention.
The system utilizes the Nvidia Holoscan platform, with the DAQIRI library streaming sensor data directly to GPU memory to bypass storage bottlenecks. The SETI-developed CyberEther framework handles signal processing via Nvidia CUDA-X libraries, while the Nexus web platform enables control through text-based commands.
Operating at the observatory, the setup processes up to 2.4 Tbps using Nvidia RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell accelerators. The system recently identified a pulsar in the Crab Nebula, marking the first real-time AI-driven detection of such an object.
Researchers are now evaluating the integration of open models like Nvidia Nemotron to enable autonomous operations in remote observatories without network connectivity. This shift aims to improve the detection and verification of potential artificial signals from extraterrestrial sources.
