The Secluso project offers an alternative to cloud-based video surveillance by using Raspberry Pi single-board computers as cameras. The system establishes an end-to-end encrypted connection between the camera and a mobile app, using a server only as a relay for encrypted data.
Hardware requirements include a Raspberry Pi and a camera module, such as the Pi Camera Module v2 priced at $25 or v1 at $10. Users must flash a custom Secluso OS image onto a microSD card using the Secluso Deploy desktop application, which is available for Windows, Linux, and macOS.
The project utilizes the OpenMLS implementation of the Messaging Layer Security protocol for encryption. All source code, including the OS, server binaries, and deployment tools, is available on GitHub, allowing users to build the system independently.
Unlike local solutions like Frigate or Home Assistant that rely on third-party IP cameras, the Secluso approach aims to eliminate risks associated with unencrypted RTSP streams. The setup process involves scanning a QR code generated by the application to pair the camera.
