The SEC Division of Examinations released its fiscal year 2027 priorities, identifying artificial intelligence and tokenization as key areas for regulatory scrutiny. The agency now views advanced AI systems as systemic market variables that impact compliance, fraud prevention, and investor protection.

Tokenization has been formally added to the list of priorities under market infrastructure risks. This shift means that brokers, investment advisers, and transfer agents developing tokenized products will face direct oversight of their compliance programs by SEC examiners.

Director Keith Cassidy stated that the new priorities reflect an adaptive approach to evolving market conditions. The examination program currently covers over 34 000 registrants, including investment companies, broker-dealers, and clearing agencies.

While the 2026 priorities previously removed cryptocurrency as a standalone focus, the 2027 document integrates AI and tokenization as central technological trends. The SEC retains discretion to review any activities related to federal securities law compliance.
