The US Securities and Exchange Commission has officially included tokenization in its examination priorities for the 2027 fiscal year. The agency categorizes this practice as an emerging market trend and a high-risk area, placing it alongside quantum computing and extended trading hours in its regulatory focus.

The regulator specifically intends to scrutinize tokenization within critical market infrastructure, including clearing agencies. In these entities, tokenized securities will be evaluated alongside other high-risk factors such as operational risks, securities lending practices, and default management protocols.

Notably, cryptocurrencies are not listed as a standalone examination category for the second year in a row. The last time the agency included a dedicated section for crypto assets in its annual priorities was during the 2025 fiscal year.

The updated focus follows increased activity from traditional financial institutions in the tokenization space. For instance, a joint venture between OKX and the Intercontinental Exchange recently filed to launch a platform that will offer tokenized shares for more than 60 companies listed in the United States.
