Andreessen Horowitz is rebranding its dedicated crypto fund to a16z Frontier. The firm is expanding the fund's investment mandate to include artificial intelligence, autonomous machines, and biology alongside its existing focus on cryptocurrency.
The fund will continue to be managed by Chris Dixon, who has led the crypto team since 2018. He will work alongside partners Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz, Eddy Lazzarin, and Guy Wuollet to oversee the new investment strategy.
The most recent size for the fund was reported at $2.2 billion, with the figure announced in May. The firm describes the change as an expansion of its scope rather than a departure from the digital asset sector.
Dixon noted that the fund will utilize crypto technology to enable payments between AI agents. He cited investments in companies like Oculus, Skydio, and Zipline as examples of the long-term investment approach the firm intends to maintain.
