A security researcher known as log4j has reverse-engineered the Tizen OS on a 2025 Samsung TV. The investigation revealed that the device processes user data, including audio recordings, screenshots, and cross-device tracking identifiers, to support targeted advertising.
The researcher identified a region-specific convolutional neural network running on the television. This model tracks user behavior, such as video progress and ad interaction. The system reportedly attempts to access microphones on connected devices, like soundbars or Bluetooth peripherals, if the TV itself lacks one.
Engineer ngxson attempted to verify the microphone activity using a Flipper Zero. Their tests showed the TV activated the microphone for five seconds before stopping. However, the researcher noted that their specific device was already rooted, which may have influenced the results.
During the reverse engineering process, the researcher utilized OpenAI tools. OpenAI subsequently banned their account, citing a violation of policies regarding cyber abuse. The researcher claims the tools were used solely for local analysis and that the ban was triggered by an automated classifier.
