Salesforce is introducing a mandatory registration system for external AI agents interacting with its platform via APIs or Model Context Protocol servers. Known as Agentic Identity, the initiative aims to provide each agent with a unique identity and specific permissions, allowing companies to monitor data access and improve security.
The rollout begins with the Winter 27 release on October 12, 2026, which includes the necessary API Catalog tools. The full requirement is scheduled to launch in November 2026. New customers purchasing services after September 17, 2026, must register their agents within three months of notification, while existing clients must comply upon contract renewal.
This registration framework prepares the ground for a new billing model based on Flex Credits. Salesforce plans to charge for headless platform interactions performed by third-party agents. While exact pricing remains undecided, the company will provide a 30-day notice to customers before updating its Flex Credit rates to include these activities.
The company describes the move as a solution to agentic sprawl, aiming to bring accountability to the growing ecosystem of AI tools from providers like Anthropic and OpenAI. While investors have reacted positively to the potential monetization of previously free agent activity, customers have expressed concerns regarding potential unbudgeted costs.
