The Swedish Government Offices, known as Regeringskansliet, has restricted direct access to ChatGPT and Claude for its staff. The decision, effective October 26, 2026, aims to enhance information security by limiting the use of consumer-grade AI services that lack formal contracts.

Microsoft Copilot remains the only approved AI assistant for general use by civil servants. The tool was authorized following an internal security review and specific configuration adjustments. Other agencies, including the Swedish Tax Agency and the National Board of Institutional Care, have implemented similar policies.

Despite the restrictions, ChatGPT and Claude remain accessible to a limited number of employees through an in-house AI platform developed by the government. This infrastructure allows officials to maintain control over data flow while continuing to utilize various AI models.

The administration previously restricted the use of the Chinese AI model DeepSeek. Meanwhile, the Swedish Enforcement Authority is currently evaluating its own AI policies, and the Transport Administration has identified security concerns regarding the use of approximately 10 open AI services.
