Russian mobile operators have launched 5G networks in pilot mode, despite extensive advertising campaigns. These networks are currently limited to specific test zones rather than a nationwide rollout in major cities.
The 5G infrastructure operates on the 4.9 GHz frequency band, which differs from the global standard of 3.4–3.8 GHz. Consequently, many modern smartphones are incompatible with these local networks.
According to the Ministry of Digital Development, operators hold permits only for testing equipment without charging subscription fees, with these authorizations valid until August 2027.
Regulations require the use of domestic equipment and software for 5G deployment. However, as of mid-September 2026, no Russian-made 5G base stations were available for commercial use.
Manufacturers such as Irteya and Yadro plan to begin supplying domestic base stations in 2027. Market experts suggest that current 5G announcements are primarily a marketing strategy to establish brand positioning.
