Rosatom has completed construction of a new technology facility within the Moscow electric battery cluster. The center is designed to serve as a hub for both the advancement of existing lithium-ion battery technology and the development of next-generation energy storage solutions.
A primary focus of the facility will be post-lithium technologies, specifically sodium-ion batteries. According to Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev, sodium-ion systems are considered a promising alternative due to the widespread availability and lower cost of raw materials compared to lithium.
While sodium-ion batteries currently trail lithium-ion counterparts in energy density, they are viewed as highly suitable for stationary storage applications where size and weight are not primary constraints. The center will also explore other emerging electrochemical systems.
The facility will integrate domestic scientific research into the development of new battery cells. Rosatom plans to scale these laboratory findings into full-scale industrial production, supporting the broader mission of the Moscow cluster to manufacture everything from small cells to traction batteries.
