Rosatom has completed acceptance testing for a prototype hybrid densitometer developed in partnership with Green Star Instruments. The device measures uranium and plutonium concentrations in solutions derived from spent nuclear fuel processing.
The system utilizes X-ray and gamma radiation to analyze samples without requiring chemical reagents or complex preparation. It features domestic components, specifically Russian-made detectors and an X-ray tube, replacing previously used imported parts.
The new methodology improves measurement accuracy and enhances personnel safety by reducing exposure. Integration into laboratory chambers allows for remote operation using manipulators, which minimizes handling of highly active samples.
Developers are currently testing the ability to monitor solutions directly within pipelines. Experiments confirmed the device can perform measurements through stainless steel pipe walls, with plans to scale the technology across the nuclear industry.
