The Russian Orbital Station (ROS) is set to receive radar equipment designed for Earth observation. According to Vladimir Solovyov, general designer at RSC Energia, this hardware will allow for surface monitoring regardless of weather conditions or lighting, overcoming the limitations of traditional optical systems.
Current optical sensors on automated satellites often struggle with dense cloud cover and polar nights. By testing radar and infrared remote sensing technologies directly on the ROS, engineers aim to validate and refine these systems before deploying them on future satellite constellations tasked with monitoring high-latitude regions.
This initiative represents a new direction for Russian space research, as such radar experiments were not conducted on the Mir station or the International Space Station. The project, which has received support from the Russian Academy of Sciences, addresses the specific need for reliable observation over vast territories with challenging environmental factors.
