Rivian and Redwood Materials have expanded their partnership to include the recycling of production waste and the repurposing of decommissioned electric vehicle batteries. Redwood will collect used battery packs from Rivian service centers across the country to determine if they can be reused for stationary energy storage or must be recycled.
The companies previously launched a collaboration in April 2026, which involved building 10 MWh of battery storage capacity at Rivian's manufacturing plant in Normal using unused battery packs. This new agreement builds upon that initial project as part of a broader strategy to develop end-to-end energy solutions.
Redwood Materials has been shifting its strategic focus since 2025. While the company continues to recover critical raw materials like cobalt, nickel, copper, and lithium, it is now placing a greater emphasis on the development and construction of stationary battery storage systems.
