Quebec-based Reaction Dynamics has unveiled Borealis, a medium-lift rocket designed to carry 6,000 kg to low Earth orbit. The company plans to conduct the maiden orbital launch of the vehicle in 2031. This development follows a strategic shift from hybrid rocket engines to liquid-fueled propulsion systems, which the company has tested 21 times over the past year.

The firm is currently raising a Series B round of over CAD 70 million to fund the initial launch of its smaller Aurora rocket and expand manufacturing capacity. Aurora, which targets a 200 kg payload capacity, is scheduled for a first orbital attempt in Q4 2028. Reaction Dynamics aims to produce eight Aurora units annually to meet market demand.

To support the Borealis program, the company estimates a need for an additional CAD 200 million. Future plans include increasing the workforce from 68 to over 350 employees by 2031 and constructing a 375,000 sq. ft. facility in Quebec. This site is intended to support a production rate of 24 Borealis launches per year.

The transition to liquid-fueled technology is intended to align the development paths of both the Aurora and Borealis vehicles. By standardizing propulsion, avionics, and tank hardware, Reaction Dynamics aims to establish a sovereign launch capability for Canada that competes with international alternatives.
