Estonian firm PowerUP Energy Technologies and Italian startup H2Boat have entered a strategic partnership to develop integrated hydrogen energy systems for the maritime sector. The collaboration focuses on replacing traditional diesel generators on yachts with cleaner, quieter alternatives that produce only water as a byproduct.

PowerUP contributes its proton exchange membrane fuel cell generators to the joint project. H2Boat, which originated as a spin-off from the University of Genoa, provides expertise in marine hydrogen systems and proprietary metal hydride storage technology. This storage method is specifically designed to meet the safety and space constraints of recreational and professional vessels.

The integrated solution aims to manage the entire energy cycle on board, including hydrogen production from renewable electricity, safe storage, and conversion into emission-free power. By combining these technologies, the companies intend to eliminate the need for yacht owners to rely on noisy diesel generators for backup power or maneuvering.

Beyond onboard systems, H2Boat is working on local hydrogen production and refilling infrastructure. The company is currently collaborating with maritime clients in the Ligurian region and near the Swiss-Italian border to support the broader adoption of hydrogen-powered marine applications.
