Porsche is reportedly developing a new flagship supercar, internally codenamed S1, which is expected to feature a flat-eight boxer engine. This move marks a shift toward combustion engines and exclusivity, with CEO Michael Leiters set to present the strategic plan during the company’s capital markets day on October 7.
The upcoming model is projected to cost approximately €500 000. While Porsche has utilized eight-cylinder boxer engines in racing, this would be the first instance of such a powertrain in a road-going production vehicle. The design of the new supercar may draw inspiration from the Porsche 911.
In a broader effort to reduce costs following a decline in the Chinese market and challenges with electric vehicle adoption, Porsche plans further workforce reductions. The company intends to cut an additional 4 100 jobs by 2035, on top of the 9 000 positions previously slated for elimination.
These layoffs represent roughly one-fifth of the total workforce. Furthermore, CEO Michael Leiters aims to scale back annual production to approximately 200 000 vehicles, reversing the previous strategy under former CEO Oliver Blume, which targeted an output of 350 000 to 400 000 units per year.
