Porsche has officially confirmed that the 718 series, comprising the Boxster and Cayman models, will transition to an all-electric powertrain. The first full year of production for these electric vehicles is scheduled for 2028.

The company has opted for a battery configuration where the pack is mounted behind the seats rather than underneath them. This design choice aims to maintain a low seating position and achieve a rear weight bias of 55.2%, similar to the previous mid-engined combustion versions which had a 59.8% rear bias.

During an investor presentation outlining the company's strategy through 2035, Porsche CEO Michael Leiters stated that the 911 model will not be electrified. The manufacturer also noted that production of gas-powered versions of the 718 series concluded in 2025.

Porsche reported a loss of $6 billion, which the company attributed to its stance on electrification. Despite this, the automaker plans to introduce a new SUV model that will feature both gas and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
