Porsche CEO Michael Leiters is adjusting the company's strategy to balance electric and combustion engine models. The automaker plans to reintroduce a petrol-powered Macan in 2028 to sell alongside the existing electric version. Meanwhile, the 911 will remain exclusively gasoline-powered, with no plans for a fully electric variant.
The company is facing financial pressure, as sales of the electric Macan dropped 40 percent year-on-year in the first half of the year, and deliveries in China fell 32 percent. Porsche's operating margin declined to 1.1 percent in 2022. To optimize operations, the firm intends to cut 9,000 jobs by 2035 and close its electric-bike, battery, and software subsidiaries.
Porsche has also raised approximately €1 billion by divesting its stakes in Bugatti Rimac and the Rimac Group. Despite these cutbacks, the company continues to develop the electric 718 model. For future electric vehicle development, Porsche will utilize shared technology platforms from the Volkswagen Group to manage engineering costs effectively.
