OpenAI is preparing to introduce a new visual advertising format within ChatGPT. Starting in late October, the company will launch tests for this feature on the free tier in the United States, focusing initially on image generation results.
Unlike previous text-based sponsored blocks, the new format will display images of products and services. These advertisements will appear separately from the AI-generated content to ensure they do not influence the chatbot's responses.
The company first began testing ads in February 2026, which were previously limited to a dedicated section below the chat interface containing logos and links. The new visual approach is currently being evaluated with a select group of advertisers.
OpenAI has implemented specific restrictions to ensure ads do not appear in conversations involving sensitive or emotionally vulnerable topics. The company also confirmed plans to explore additional advertising placement options in the future.
Users subscribed to paid plans, including Plus, Pro, and Enterprise, will continue to access ChatGPT without any advertisements.
