OpenAI has acquired Glass Imaging, a company specializing in smartphone camera technology, for more than $300 million. The startup, based in Los Altos, California, was founded in 2019 and had previously secured approximately $30 million in venture funding.

The founders, Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, are former Apple engineers who previously led the development of the Portrait Mode feature. Their company focuses on utilizing neural networks to enhance image quality directly at the moment of capture, bypassing the limitations of physical camera hardware.

This acquisition aligns with ongoing reports suggesting that OpenAI is exploring the development of proprietary hardware, including smartphones, earbuds, and AI-powered companion devices. The company has not yet provided an official comment regarding the transaction.

This move follows OpenAI's 2025 acquisition of the device startup io, a venture founded by CEO Sam Altman and designer Jony Ive. That deal was valued at $6.5 billion and marked a significant step in the company's hardware ambitions.
