OpenAI is introducing a new visual advertising format within its ChatGPT image generation tool. The company announced on Monday, Oct. 5, that this feature aims to display product inspiration and usage scenarios to users. The ads will be clearly labeled and kept separate from the content generated by the AI model, ensuring they do not influence ChatGPT responses.

Testing for this format is scheduled to begin later this month. Alongside the launch, OpenAI is expanding its measurement tools and partner ecosystem to allow advertisers to track the impact of these ads on their business operations. The company is also collaborating with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science on brand suitability evaluation pilots to provide greater transparency.

The expansion into advertising is part of a broader strategy to monetize the platform, which currently serves over 1 billion monthly users, most of whom do not pay for subscriptions. OpenAI has reportedly restricted ads from companies that offer competing image or audio generation products, a move that highlights the tension between growing an advertiser base and protecting its own services.

This shift in business model mirrors challenges faced by other tech giants. Regulators have previously scrutinized digital advertising practices, including a federal court ruling against Google for monopolistic conduct in its ad technology business. OpenAI now faces the task of balancing its revenue growth targets with the competitive dynamics of its expanding ecosystem.
