OpenAI has updated its ChatGPT browser extension, enabling the assistant to access open tabs in Chrome. Users can now prompt the AI to compare page content, organize data, or assist with browser-based tasks like filling out forms, drafting emails, or summarizing vendor pricing.

The updated sidebar allows users to interact with ChatGPT directly while browsing, maintaining access to conversation history. Beyond Chrome, the extension is compatible with Edge, Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi, though the sidebar feature is unavailable on Opera.

The tool requires explicit user authorization to access browser tabs, history, or perform actions like downloading files. ChatGPT requests permission before interacting with a new website, allowing users to grant access for a single session, a specific site, or all websites.

This update follows the discontinuation of the ChatGPT Atlas browser. OpenAI confirmed that Atlas has been retired and will no longer receive updates. Data from Atlas, including bookmarks and history, will not be automatically migrated to the new extension.
