OpenAI has introduced Pando, a custom Git backend designed to manage the company's monorepo. The system reduces Git push latency by approximately 80%. Development of the backend took about 10 weeks, with a single engineer leading the project alongside teams of Codex AI agents.

The system addresses scaling challenges caused by a 1,378% increase in Codex-driven commits between Q1 2024 and Q3 2026. Projections suggest this growth could reach 2,400% by the end of 2026. Traditional Git architectures previously struggled under this load, with reliability dropping below 90%.

Pando facilitates parallel updates to unrelated branches while maintaining causal consistency. It remains fully compatible with the standard Git protocol and existing clients. OpenAI has also contributed improvements back to the core Git project to support these operations.

The infrastructure currently serves nearly one petabyte of data daily using a limited number of CPU cores. At peak performance, the system delivered over 57 TB of Git pack data in one hour, with 99% sourced from local disk cache. Clone and fetch operations can utilize up to 10 Gbps of bandwidth.
