Enlyth, a tech researcher, has identified the oldest graphical user interface application that remains functional on Windows 11 without emulation. The software, CDPLAYER.EXE, originated from a pre-release version of Windows NT 3.1 and was linked on November 16, 1992.

To verify the functionality of the 1992 application on modern hardware, the researcher utilized a DLL file named cdemu.dll to emulate an optical drive, as most contemporary systems lack physical CD drives. The application operates as intended on the latest Windows 11 release.

Prior to this discovery, the researcher considered FREECELL.EXE from February 1993 as a candidate for the oldest compatible GUI application. This file was originally distributed with the Win32s environment, which enabled 32-bit applications to run on 16-bit systems like Windows 3.1.

The researcher also explored older software using the Winevdm project, which allows 16-bit applications to run on 64-bit Windows. Through this method, they successfully launched REVERSI.EXE, a GUI game from Windows 1.01 dated November 15, 1985, which is approximately 41 years old.
