Elon Musk announced plans for Tesla and SpaceX to enter the semiconductor manufacturing industry. Speaking at the X Takeover event in Austin, Musk acknowledged he lacks direct experience in chip production but stated his companies intend to outperform existing market leaders by utilizing custom-designed manufacturing equipment.
The initiative centers on the Terafab plant, a joint venture between Tesla, SpaceX, and Intel located in Grimes County, Texas. The project involves an initial investment exceeding $15 billion. The facility is expected to create approximately 3,000 jobs and has secured a $30 million grant from the Texas Enterprise Fund.
Musk aims to accelerate the development cycle by targeting 10 chip designs per year, compared to the industry standard of one design every two years. He noted that while some iterations may fail, this approach is intended to speed up testing and innovation. The company has begun recruiting specialized engineers to support these efforts.
The project seeks to apply production methodologies used in automotive and aerospace manufacturing to the semiconductor sector. Musk emphasized that his companies intend to operate the facility independently rather than relying on external foundry management. He estimated that achieving these goals may require several years of development.
