MTS has launched a 5G network in Sochi using the 2100 MHz band on existing LTE frequencies. This marks the fourth city in the Krasnodar region to receive 5G coverage, following launches in Krasnodar, Novorossiysk, and Anapa in September.
The network is currently active in 10 locations across Greater Sochi, including Central Sochi and the Sirius federal territory. Coverage areas include the Sirius railway station, the RUDN University branch, the Central Stadium, and parts of Kurortny Prospect.
The deployment utilizes the principle of technological neutrality, allowing the simultaneous use of frequency resources for both 4G and 5G networks without building new infrastructure. To prepare for this, MTS upgraded over 2,000 base stations and increased the transport network's capacity.
The rollout follows a decision by the State Commission for Radio Frequencies (GKRCh) allowing operators to deploy 5G on existing 4G spectrum and equipment. Starting in 2027, operators must transition to domestic base stations, with the process scheduled for completion by the end of 2031.
