MTS has launched a 5G network in Arkhangelsk, utilizing existing LTE 2100 MHz frequencies. The deployment covers key urban areas, including the Troitsky Prospect, Gaidar and Voskresenskaya streets, as well as business and retail locations in the Lomonosovsky district. Residential areas in the 3 Lesozavod settlement, Varavino-Faktoriya, and Maimaksa are also included in the coverage zone.
The operator uses the principle of technological neutrality, allowing the simultaneous use of a single frequency resource for both 4G and 5G networks. This approach enables the expansion of 5G coverage without the need to construct separate infrastructure. According to Grigory Bedrin, director of MTS in the Arkhangelsk region, this development supports smart city services and IoT solutions.
The deployment follows a decision by the State Commission for Radio Frequencies (GKRCh), which permitted operators to launch 5G networks on frequencies previously allocated for 4G using existing equipment. Furthermore, a transition to domestic base stations is scheduled to begin in 2027 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2031.
