Morgan Stanley projects that hyperscalers and neocloud providers will face their most significant negative free cash flow in 2027. The bank estimates that cash burn will reach nearly $600 billion that year as infrastructure spending outpaces operating cash flow.

Total investment in AI compute is forecast to hit approximately $1.58 trillion in 2027, which is 14% higher than the baseline capital expenditure estimate of $1.388 trillion. The difference of $195 billion is attributed to lease financing obligations.

The investment trend remains upward, with spending estimated at $980 billion in 2026 and rising to $1.81 trillion by 2028. For the top four hyperscalers, the cumulative cash shortfall is projected to reach roughly $600 billion through 2028.

To fund these operations, hyperscalers issued approximately $255 billion in unsecured bonds by mid-October 2026. Morgan Stanley notes that high-rated firms like Amazon and Google maintain strong borrowing capacity and could potentially add $400 billion in new debt in 2027.

Nvidia is expected to capture approximately $700 billion from the total AI investment wave. While high-rated companies remain stable, the bank warns that lower-rated entities may encounter stricter financing constraints and increased stock market volatility.
