The Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) has launched a new elective course titled AI4Research for postgraduate students. The program, which began in September 2026, focuses on integrating artificial intelligence tools into scientific workflows to automate routine tasks and improve research efficiency.
More than 60 postgraduate students are currently enrolled in the course. The curriculum spans 15 weeks of remote learning, consisting of 30 academic hours of lectures and 14 hours of seminars. Students are required to pass a differentiated credit test upon completion of the program.
The course covers the practical application of AI in research, including literature search automation, code generation, theorem proving, and technical report structuring. Students learn to build a personal AI environment by connecting AI agents to scientific databases and their own research data.
The final module focuses on industry-specific AI applications, such as molecular modeling for the oil and gas sector, climate science, and advanced materials design. The teaching staff consists of 14 experts, including researchers from the MIPT Institute of Artificial Intelligence.
This initiative follows the April 2026 pilot course AI4Math, which introduced AI-assisted tools for mathematics students. The university aims to provide researchers with the skills to verify AI-generated results while maintaining their role as the primary authors of their scientific work.
